It can even help get a usable exposure when light levels are extremely low, so leaving it on permanently is not a bad idea at all. Unlike the HDR modes on most smartphones Google's HDR+ mode not only increases dynamic range in high-contrast scenes, but it also reduces noise and improves detail in low light conditions. The good news is that, thanks to the Pixel's powerful processing, there is now only a very minimal delay when capturing HDR+ exposures, meaning you can leave the mode activated or set to Auto without any real penalty.
